12 Questions to Ask When You Visit a School

A campus visit is your best chance to see what everyday life will really look like for your child. These questions help you make the most of it.

Brochures and websites show a school at its best. A visit shows you a school as it really is. It is your chance to see how children and teachers talk to each other, how the classrooms feel and whether you can picture your child there.

To make the most of it, go with questions. Here are twelve that parents tell us are the most useful.

About learning

  1. How do you teach beyond the textbook? Listen for real examples, not slogans. At SIGMA we will show you how ASTERIA works in a lesson.
  2. What happens when a child finds a subject hard? Every child struggles with something. Ask how teachers notice and what support looks like.
  3. How do you keep bright children stretched? Good schools challenge every child, not just the middle of the class.
  4. How will I know how my child is doing? Ask about reports, parent meetings and how easy it is to talk to a teacher.

About care and wellbeing

  1. How do you help new children settle? The first weeks shape how a child feels about a school.
  2. How do you handle bullying or unkindness? Every school should have a clear answer.
  3. What is the school's approach to discipline? Look for fairness, consistency and respect.
  4. For residential students: who is with them in the evening and at night? Ask to meet house parents and see the residences.

About life beyond the classroom

  1. Which sports, arts and activities are part of the timetable? Not just offered, but part of every week.
  2. How are life skills taught? Communication, teamwork and independence do not happen by accident. See our article on why life skills matter.
  3. Can I see the library, labs, sports spaces and dining area? Children learn in all of these places.
  4. What would a normal day look like for my child? From arrival to going home, or to bedtime for residential students.

Watch the children as much as the buildings. Are they relaxed? Do they talk to teachers easily? That tells you more than any brochure.

What to notice without asking

  • How staff greet children in the corridors
  • Whether children's own work is on the walls
  • How the school feels between lessons and at break
  • Whether your questions get direct, honest answers
  • How your child reacts: ask them afterwards what they liked

After the visit

Write down your impressions the same day, while they are fresh, and talk them over with your child. If you are still comparing options, our admission checklist can help you plan the next steps.
