CBSE School Admission: A Simple Checklist for Parents

From the first enquiry to the first day of school: what to prepare, what to ask and how to keep the admission process stress-free.

Changing or choosing a school can feel like a lot of paperwork and a lot of decisions at once. It does not need to be. This checklist breaks the admission journey into clear steps, so you always know what comes next.

Every school's process is a little different, so use this as a guide and confirm the details with the admissions team. At SIGMA, our admission process is designed to feel simple: start with a conversation, come and see the school, and we guide you through the rest.

Step by step

  1. Make a shortlist. Think about curriculum, distance, Day or Residential options, the school's values and what your child enjoys.
  2. Enquire. Share your child's age, current grade and what you are looking for. A good admissions team will answer honestly, including about fees.
  3. Visit the campus. Nothing replaces seeing the school on a normal working day. Take your child if you can.
  4. Meet and interact. Many schools meet the child and family. At SIGMA this is a friendly conversation, not a test to fear.
  5. Complete the application. Fill in the form and submit the documents the school asks for.
  6. Confirm and prepare. Once a place is offered, complete the formalities and start getting ready for the first day.

Documents schools usually ask for

Requirements vary by school and by grade, so always check the school's own list. Families are commonly asked for:

  • Your child's birth certificate
  • Recent passport-size photographs of the child (and sometimes parents)
  • The latest report card from the current school
  • A transfer certificate or school leaving certificate when moving from another school
  • Identity and address proof for parents
  • Any medical information the school should know about

Questions worth asking before you apply

  • How does the school teach, beyond the textbook?
  • What is a normal day like for a child in this grade?
  • How does the school support children who are new, shy or finding a subject hard?
  • What sports, arts and activities are part of the timetable?
  • For residential students: who looks after them, and how do parents stay in touch?
  • What are the fees, and are scholarships available this year?

We have gathered more of these in our guide to questions to ask on a school visit.

When should you start?

Earlier is calmer. Starting a few months before the new academic year gives you time to visit more than one school, talk it over as a family and complete paperwork without rushing. Admissions for the 2026–27 academic year are open at SIGMA now.
