Preparing Your Child for Their First Term Away from Home

A few simple conversations and routines at home can make the first weeks of residential life feel calm and familiar.

The first term away from home is a big step, for children and for parents. It is normal for both to feel excited and nervous at the same time. The good news is that a little preparation at home makes a real difference to how quickly a child settles.

Here is what we suggest to families joining Residential School at SIGMA.

In the weeks before term

Talk about it, often and lightly

Children cope better with change they understand. Talk about what a day will look like: classes, meals with friends, sports, study time and bedtime. Look at photos of the campus together. If you visited, remind them of the people they met. Keep these conversations short and positive, and let your child ask anything.

Practise small routines

Independence grows through small, everyday tasks. A few weeks of practice helps a lot:

  • Waking up with an alarm and getting ready without reminders
  • Keeping their own things tidy and knowing where everything is
  • Packing a school bag the night before
  • Making small choices on their own, like what to wear
  • Asking an adult for help, clearly and politely

Pack together

Follow the school's packing list, and let your child pack with you so they know what they have. Label everything. Add one or two small comforts from home: a family photo, a favourite book or their own pillowcase. Familiar things help a new room feel like theirs.

The first weeks

Most children go through a short settling-in period. Some are homesick in the first days, some a few weeks in, and some hardly at all. All of it is normal. At SIGMA, house parents and residential staff are there for exactly this: guiding daily routines, noticing who needs a little extra support, and helping friendships form.

Homesickness is not a sign that something is wrong. It is a sign that home matters, and that is a good thing.

How parents can help from home

  1. Keep goodbyes warm and short. A long, emotional farewell can make it harder for your child to step into their new routine.
  2. Agree a calling rhythm. Regular, predictable calls are more reassuring than very frequent ones. Follow the residence's guidance on timings.
  3. Ask about the good parts first. "Who did you sit with at lunch?" invites a different conversation from "Are you missing us?"
  4. Stay in touch with the house parents. If something worries you, tell them. They see your child every day and can help quickly.
  5. Be patient. Most children find their feet within the first few weeks, and many surprise their parents with how quickly they grow.

What children gain

Residential life teaches things a classroom cannot: managing time, looking after belongings, living alongside others and solving small problems without a parent close by. Children come home more organised, more confident and often with lifelong friends. Read more about residential facilities at SIGMA, or visit the residences before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take a child to settle into boarding school?

It varies. Many children settle within the first few weeks. House parents and residential staff watch closely in this period and support children who need a little longer.

How often can parents call their child?

Follow the residence's guidance on calling times. A regular, predictable rhythm is usually more reassuring for children than very frequent calls.

What should we pack for residential school?

Follow the school's packing list, label everything and add one or two small comforts from home, such as a family photo or a favourite book.
